Wissett Wines was conceived during Jonathan’s (first!) mid-life crisis in the mid-eighties, when we searched out Valley Farm for the express purpose of establishing a vineyard. The first vines were brought from Alsace, France and planted in the spring of 1987.

The vineyard was enlarged some five years later so that there are now 8 acres of vines with the potential of yielding 10,000 bottles or more of fine English Wine each year – weather-permitting of course!

The vines are all grafted on to disease-resistant root-stock suitable for our soils and climate. They are planted at 1.8m (6ft) to 2.4m (8ft) centres in rows set 3.6m (12ft) apart, for ease of machinery access. The vines in the old “clos” vineyard behind the barn are trained on wires at eye-level, a system known as Geneva Double Curtain, named after the wine-growing district in the Finger Lakes region of upper New York State, USA, while those in the newer, bigger vineyards are trained according to the Scott-Henry system that is adopted extensively in New Zealand.
